Hair loss (Alopecia) can be broadly
divided into scarring and non-scarring alopecia. Hair
loss is a fairly common problem many of us will face.
It is important to exclude any underlying predisposing
conditions that can cause premature and/or increased
hair loss.
Scarring alopecia is usually secondary to an underlying
disease which should be further investigated before
starting any form of treatment.
For non-scarring alopecia, the commonest causes are:
• Androgenetic alopecia (or male pattern hair
loss)
• Alopecia Areata
• Telogen Effluvium (hair loss due to viral illness,
high fevers, dengue pregnancy for example)
Androgenetic alopecia is the commonest
hair loss condition affecting both men and women.
