Dr SM Yuen graduated as the top student of Victoria
School in the graduating class of 1992. He was
also awarded the VAC (Victoria Advisory Committee)
award for overall excellence – having won
2 national team golds in cross country, and numerous
individual bronze medal placings. While in National
Junior College, he was also a holder of the Ministry
Of Education Scholarship for 1993 and 1994, and
captained the college cross country team to a
national silver medal.
He entered medical school in 1997 and graduated
from the National University of Singapore in 2002
with the degree of M.B.B.S.
He spent 3 years as an internal medicine specialist
trainee rotating through various medical departments
of SGH including Gastroenterology, Neurology,
Renal Medicine, Cardiology, Dermatology, and Rheumatology.
These early years made him develop a passion for
internal medicine and preventive medicine. However,
he knew deep down inside that his first love was
to be a family physician because he treasured
the special rapport and relationships that family
doctors had with their patients. After spending
another year in a government polyclinic, he left
for private practice in 2007, spending another
one and a half years with a mid-sized medical
group. He finally struck out on his own in 2008
with the opening of Atlas
Medical - Laser & Aesthetics Clinic.
Over the years, Dr SM Yuen also developed a strong
interest in Aesthetic Medicine, spending countless
hours researching on advanced equipment and skin
care products - “why” they work, and
“how” they work. He has been accredited
by the Aesthetic Practice Oversight Committee,
Singapore Medical Council (APOC, SMC) for Certificate
of Competence in Aesthetic Dermatology:
• Fractional Lasers for skin rejuvenation
• Ablative Lasers for surgery and skin rejuvenation
• Pigment Lasers for pigmentary skin conditions
• IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) for skin rejuvenation
• Botox for aesthetic applications
• Fillers for aesthetic applications
• Non-surgical skin tightening devices (including
radiofrequency)
• Laser and IPL assisted hair removal
He also possesses an American Academy of Aesthetic
Medicine (certificate), and is a member of the
American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine and the
Society of Aesthetic Medicine, Singapore. He is
a strong believer of “preventive aesthetics”
and “non-invasive” aesthetics. He
feels that the earlier a patient starts on a disciplined,
life-long skin care regime, the better skin health
he or she will enjoy.
Dr SM Yuen’s vision is that medical aesthetics
should become part and parcel of primary medicine,
and he views it as an extension of his medical
practice. (Yes, he still sees the common colds
and enjoys managing patients with hypertension,
diabetes and high cholesterol) His belief is that
making patients look good not only serves to enhance
their beauty, but also improves their self confidence
and self esteem, translating into happier lives,
less stress, and improved health.
Dr SM Yuen also believes that no patient should
be denied access to good aesthetic treatments
for common skin problems like pigmentation, scarring,
acne, dull skin etc. He strives to keep his fees
reasonable and affordable, while emphasizing good
service with the aim to always value-add for his
patients.
Away from medicine, Dr SM Yuen has a deep love
and passion for music. He has won several national
and regional awards for Electone performance.
After winning the Grand Prix award (1st Prize)
for the Singapore Electone Festival in 1996, he
went on to represent Singapore at the Asia-Oceanic
Electone Festival, clinching another Grand Prix
award (1st prize). He also had the honour of being
Asia’s representative in the prestigious
International Electone Concours. In his musical
career, Dr SM Yuen has also performed as a keyboardist/pianist
in many shows with local and regional pop artistes,
including Kit Chan, Tanya, Andy Lau and Zhang
Hui Mei.
He took this love for music one step further
when he founded Wedding Harmony in 2006, Singapore’s
first ever wedding music company that specializes
in creating original wedding love songs for wedding
couples. In his capacity as Executive Music Director,
he has grown Wedding Harmony into a market leader
in the wedding music industry. Wedding Harmony
has produced more than 50 original works, released
2 commercial albums, and performed in over 250
weddings in a span of 2 years. Wedding Harmony
has been featured in The Straits Times Life section,
Style Weddings, Her World Brides, and has also
appeared on various radio shows on FM100.3 and
FM 97.2.
Being in the wedding industry has allowed Dr
SM Yuen to understand the concerns and needs of
wedding couples better, and a big part of his
aesthetic practice revolves around designing treatment
programmes to help brides and grooms-to-be achieve
their skin care goals and to look their best on
their big day. Atlas Medical™ - Laser & Aesthetics Clinic is a partner
in major bridal magazines and local and international
wedding road shows, with Dr SM Yuen always happy
to share his knowledge and thoughts at workshops
and informal sessions.
Dr SM Yuen’s passion, foresight, multi-talented
abilities, and commitment to his patients has
made him a unique medical professional as he seeks
creative and innovative solutions to their needs,
while maintaining service and quality of the highest
level – certainly a trademark of whatever
he does. A visit to his boutique aesthetic clinic in Ngee Ann City, Orchard Road will immediately draw you to his attention to detail, his emphasis on personalized patient care,
his focus on patient comfort, and his never ending
quest to provide a truly impressive standard of
service quality.
His commitment to continuing education and self-improvement
is evident as he spends a significant amount of
time attending seminars and conferences locally
and overseas. “As a doctor, you can never
stop learning. Medicine is changing ever so rapidly.
To stop learning is to stop doctoring.”
He also adds “The modern day doctor cannot
be someone who just sits in a chair, scribbles
with his pen, mutters medical jargon, and whisks
patients out in 2 minutes. He needs to be more
than that. Understanding how the world works,
what makes people tick, and what patients desire,
is the key to being a complete doctor; and all
the while upholding the ethical, professional
and societal responsibilities of a medical professional.”
